Meet our brand founders

We are so excited to be  launching C & The Moon, an environmentally conscious, non toxic skincare brand from Malibu this week at Beauty Warrior, so we wanted to introduce the founder and creator Carson Meyer and share our recent interview with her.  

Carson, can you share with us a little bit about your background and what prompted you to start your own clean beauty brand?

The Malibu Made Body Scrub was made in my kitchen out of necessity to heal my own dry and sensitive skin. When I moved to New York for college, it provided game-changing relief during my first NY winter. It was my go-to gift for friends and family for many years before bringing it to market in 2018.

I noticed you are a certified birth doula, has this influenced your brand philosophy in any way?

Absolutely. For new mamas, a bath or shower might be her only bit of alone time of the day. I wanted to create a product that would pamper new and expecting mamas and nourish their changing bodies. Working with newborns I saw first hand how the skin, our largest organ, takes in information from the environment around us and how the human body is itself a delicate ecosystem. Creating a clean product that is made without any toxic ingredients was so important to me. I believe that we should be as thoughtful about what goes in and on our bodies during all stages of life, not just pregnancy.

I had read that your your mum is an environmental activist. What influence did this have on you and your brand?

Growing up my mother worked closely with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Environmental Working Group (EWG). Through her work, she learned about the importance of clean beauty and personal care products before it was really talked about in the beauty industry and taught me to steer clear of endocrine disruptors in personal care products. Back then there weren't as many great clean beauty brands to choose from, so we began to make our own products in our kitchen. That is where the formula for The Malibu Made Body Scrub came from. I am so grateful to have been raised by someone who instilled in me the importance of honoring our bodies and honoring mother earth. A portion of all C & The Moon proceeds are now donated to the NRDC.

I feel like “clean beauty” is about so much more than just safe ingredients in products these days. What does the term “Clean Beauty” mean to you?

To me clean beauty means honoring the beauty of nature and seeing yourself as part of it.

Where do you see the future of clean beauty and how would you like to see it evolve?

It is exciting to see the conversation around clean beauty include the importance of sustainability. To me they are one in the same. I hope we can move towards recognizing we are only as healthy as the world around us.

Why do you think adopting a clean beauty routine is so important?

Unfortunately, there are few to no national regulations that limit the use of harmful substances in everyday products, which means we have to be more diligent about the choices we make as consumers. Our skin - our largest organ - absorbs what it comes in contact with. More and more we are learning about the impact endocrine disrupting chemicals are having on our health, especially hormonal and reproductive health. Recent studies have shown that by removing endocrine disrupting chemicals from skincare alone we can reduce levels in our bodies by up to 40% in just days! Toxic skincare products ultimately compromise the skin, health and ecosystem. We are spoiled for choice with clean beauty brands. There is really no reason to be taking risks in the name of beauty. I have seen so many amazing reviews for the cult favourite Malibu Body scrub including Kim Kardashian calling it the “best scrub ever” How did that review come about and what makes this scrub so special?

When Kim posted I was completely shocked! It was such an exciting moment for me. What sets The Malibu Made Body Scrub apart is that it is not just an exfoliator. It is incredibly hydrating, locking in moisture and making your skin glow. It is also loved for its food-grade vanilla scent that smells like a sugar cookie. It is so special to know people love the product - especially skincare enthusiasts who have tried everything! It is incredibly rewarding to know that the product is delivering results and making happy customers. To me that is the ultimate form of success no matter who the customer is.

Do you have any plans to expand the C & The Moon range of products?

We’re working on some new products that we’re excited to launch hopefully soon!
